The holidays are a wonderful time to show family and friends how much they mean to you through gifts, goodies, and shared activities. But for people in need, not having the means to celebrate the holidays can be incredibly hard. This year, why not share your good fortune by volunteering some of your time? Giving back to the Kent community can spark joy in someone’s world, and your own – because giving feels so good! Check out some tips from Latitude at Kent for showing our neighbors some love during the holidays, or any time.
Volunteer at The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army provides a number of services for people in need. These include operating shelters, providing food for families, helping people after natural disasters, providing much-needed winter clothing, and more. You can volunteer to assist with any of these activities as well as working in their second-hand shops, where they generate income to support their services. Or you can help with office work or raise money by ringing a bell outside grocery stores and other high foot-traffic spots – any way you can lend a hand will be appreciated. Visit the Central USA Salvation Army website to learn more.
Volunteer With Big Brothers Big Sisters
Offering support to a younger person facing adversity can make a big difference in their life – and all you have to do is be their friend! Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteers provide mentoring friendships for kids ages 5 through to young adulthood, spending a few hours two to three times a month with them, and doing things like seeing a movie, going out to eat, helping them with their homework, or just hanging out. Sound like something you might be up for? Check out the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America website for more info.
Volunteer at Kent Free Library
If you’re a bibliophile, this volunteer opportunity is perfect for you. The Kent Free Library is an important community hub, providing people of all ages and incomes with access to educational, recreational, informational, and cultural books and reading material. Volunteers can contribute their time to opportunities like helping visitors use library services, membership drives, book sales, and book sorting. Visit the Kent Free Library website to learn about becoming a member and supporting this important community offering.
Volunteering your time is a great way to spark joy in the lives of others during the holidays and all year-long! For more ways to get involved in the Kent community, check out the Latitude at Kent blog.
